Review of Bonsai Boy's Decorative Landscape Pebbles
(Small Grade Size)

I am not a Bonsai tree collector and perhaps this would be obvious to someone who has been into this art. However, I bought these pebbles for a different intended purpose and was unpleasantly surprised that they are very small. The picture is a magnification of what you get.In reality, the package I received was about 3" x 2" and the size of the pebbles approximately 2-3 mm or 1/8 inch or even smaller. If you have imagine the size of aquarium gravel that is fairly fine grained, you will get a sense for the overall texture that will be created.

The color of the pebbles is a beautiful natural looking brown and they have a bit of smoothness and luster to them.I imagine they would look beautiful under a Bonsai tree, but you only get enough to do one plant. This seems a bit expensive to me, but this is not my hobby area and perhaps this is the going rate.

Review of Desert Rose Plant - Natural Bonsai - Adenium obesum

I RECEIVED MY DESERT ROSE PLANT IN 4 DAYS, EARLIER THAN EXPECTED, AND THE HEATING PAD WAS STILL VERY WARM.THE PLANT WAS LARGER THAN EXPECTED 14" TALL. THE PRICE WAS, AS I CONSIDER IT TO BE, MUCH LOWER THAN OTHERS OFFERING THE SAME PLANT. THE PLANT WAS PACKAGED VERY CAREFULLY AND WAS NOT DAMAGED WHEN IT ARRIVED. I HAVE INCLUDED A PICTURE OF THE PLANT ON THE DAY I RECEIVED IT (DEC. 21ST) AND I WILL BE LETTING YOU KNOW WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE A YEAR FROM NOW.THANK YOU HIRTS GARDEN FOR MAKING MY VERY FIRST PLANT ORDER ONLINE A GREAT ONE.

Product Description:
Desert Rose -Adenium obesumGeneral Information: The Desert Rose is a native of East Africa. It will grow from 6 1/2 to 10 feet in the wild. It has fleshy leaves and beautiful 2-inch pink open-trumpet shaped flowers. It is a succulent, and forms more of a bush than a tree. It makes an excellent house plant or indoor bonsai. Lighting: Needs lots of light and fresh air. Keep in a bright location in winter. In summer, if possible, move outdoors to a sunny or partly shaded location.Temperature: Growing temperature should not be below 54 degrees. However, in the winter, keeping it cool (between 54-61 degrees) whch gives the plant a needed rest.Watering: Needs little water during winter, especially when kept cool. Increase water during growing and blooming periods. The total watering needed is similar to crassula, portulacaria and other succulents, and it will lose leaves if overwatered.Feeding: Monthly during spring and summer with liquid bonsai fertilizer. Fish emulsion is also reported to work well.Pruning and wiring: Style primarily by clip and grow. Do heavy pruning after the plant's rest period. However, it bleeds profusely, so heavy pruning should be kept to a minimum. New shoots can be pruned regularly. The sap is poisonous, so clean hands after pruning, and avoid getting sap into open wounds.Propagation: Similar to jade trees - cuttings need to be dried for 3-4 days before planting in a sand-peat mix.Repotting: Root prune and repot every two years, after the winter rest period, in a mix of 2 parts bonsai soil, 2 parts peat, and one part sand. Can tolerate being pot-bound.

Review of Giant Sequoia 50 Seeds - BONSAI - Sequoia Giganteum

Out of 50 seeds I planted, only one has germinated.I'll know better once it gets big enough to transplant out of my bathroom.I followed the instructions to the letter, but I'm not sure how well they will grow in Illinois...

Click Here to see more reviews about: Giant Sequoia 50 Seeds - BONSAI - Sequoia Giganteum

Product Description:
The "General Sherman" is a giant sequoia growing in Sequoia National Park, California, that happens to be the largest living thing on Earth. This tree is 275' tall and its crown spreads 107'. The trunk is more than 26' in diameter. The General Sherman is believed to be 2,500 years old, and weigh more than 1000 tons. John Muir called the giant sequoia "the noblest of a noble race." The giant sequoia is a columnar or cone-shaped tree, losing its lower branches and becoming flat-topped with age. Trees more than 100 years old typically are free of branches to a height of 100' or more. In cultivation, giant sequoias usually grow no more than 60-100' tall and retain their lower branches which may droop down to touch the ground and sometimes take root. The reddish brown bark is very thick (up to 20" thick) and deeply fissured. The bright gray-green leaves are scale-like, sharp-pointed, 1/4" long, overlapping each other, and completely covering the twigs. The egg shaped cones are 3" long, and remain on the tree for up to 20 years. Unlike the related California redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), giant sequoia does not sprout from the roots. The General Sherman is considered to be the largest giant sequoia because of a combination of height, canopy spread and trunk diameter. However, some giant sequoias are closer to 300' tall, and some California redwoods and coast Douglas-firs (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. menziesii), although not as massive as giant sequoias, are even taller.

Review of Wine Grape Bonsai

I received my wine bonsai and immediately followed all the directions given. A few days later it began going dormant at least so I thought. I figured it was due to the slight change in weather which was fine. A few weeks later I discovered it had no live roots. It was completely dead. I would expect it to live for a very long time. What was up with that?

Review of 4pc Soil Sieve Set, Stainless Steel 12" diameter

Where has this been all my life!I do a lot of gardening and there are a lot of stones that made it difficult and I usually ended up throwing good soil away with the rocks. But no more. With the soil sieve I just fill it with soil, shake it and then throw the remaining stones away and am left with a beautiful pile of clean dirt. (I know-oxymoron) It's fast and kind of fun. My only suggestion would be they make it a little bigger. Don't be misled by "Bonsai". I use it outdoors and I have multiple gardens.

Review of New Zealand Tea 20 Seeds - Indoor Bonsai - Leptospermum

I bought this plant as "Australian Tea Tree" about 10 years ago. It's absolutely beautiful. It has dark green, needle-like leaves, tiny dark red flowers with black centers and is light and lacy, not dense. It has survived the heat and humidity; near drought conditions [I water by hose when I can.]; the light freezes we normally have; and even some more extended heavy freezes, as well. I planted it in the 'L' by the door of our brick house when I first got it. One year, it's top branch had grown past the eaves of the house, and I lost that branch to a heavy freeze, but other than that, it's been totally happy. It does not get special attention, but doesn't seem to need it, either. I bought a second one with pink flowers a couple of years later, but it did not make it through the first winter. The only difference in it's care was that it was planted in the middle of the same flower bed; not in the more protected corner. I guess that means that it could use a little winter protection here in zone 8 Myrtle Beach, S.C. I bought a plant; about 8-9 inches tall; and it is about 12 feet tall this year; slightly above the eaves, again. It is still one of my favorite plants. [I apologize if my review comes up twice; I think I lost the first one.]

New Zealand Tea Bonsai

Leptospermum scoparium 'Crimson Glory'

Attractive New Zealand shrub called the "Tea Plant" by Captain Cook because of the agreeably aromatic tea his men made from the leaves. It is hardy in zones 9-10. In cooler regions it makes an excellent patio or house plant. Whether indoors or out this unusual plant needs full sun. It is native to Tasmania, New Zealand, Australia (New South Wales). It grows 8 feet tall but can be trimmed at any height. It is even used as a bonsai tree! To the left is a gorgeous flowering indoor 'tropical' bonsai! This tree produces small pink flowers which bloom 11 months out of the year (throughout the winter).

Review of Brussel's Fringe Flower Outdoor Bonsai Tree

The tree is lovely and has many branches to train and many buds, and was a good price. The subject I want to complain about is how it was packed for shipping:The potting dish sat in a styrofoam base which held the tree up fairly well and then the box was stuffed with "peanuts".However, the dish was not secured to the box and neither was the tree!Knowing how the mail deliverers handle packages, I'm not surprised that five WHOLE branches had been broken off because the tree bounced against the sides and most likely the top of the box!!There MUST be a better way to ship live plants!Valerie Foyle

What a fantastic bonsai! Small fine leaves spiral around stems, and the truck of reddish-brown fibrous bark can be absolutely stunning. It is deciduous, so it loses its needles in the fall. This cypress gets 1"-2" cones. When grown outside as a full-size tree, it can get 50' to 100' tall and 20' to 30' wide. It gets cypress knees when grown in or near water. Cypress also makes a good street tree because it has easy autumn cleanup. Review of Japanese Pagoda Tree 10 Seeds - Sophora - Bonsai -SALE*

These seeds were purchased at the beginning of August and were immediately sowed.Five were sowed in potting soil with slight acidity (as opposed to a seeding mixture) and the other five were sowed in cotton balls. The black seeds look like round beans approximately 6-7mm in diameter.

In 10 days (Aug 2 - Aug 12) I noticed that all of the seeds in the cotton balls had already started germinating which was surprising because the note that was included with the seeds indicated "MAY BE SLOW GERMINATING".I checked the ones in soil and all but one germinated.(That was probably my fault because I accidentally damaged the seed a week prior when I noticed that the husk was molding.)So of the ten seeds I received nine germinated, which is a surprising rate.I'm not an expert on Japanese Pagoda propagation so this may, in fact, be the normal success rate.

The husks of the seeds in the soil all developed mold while none developed in the cotton balls. The mold did not interfere with germination but is an unsightly fuzzy, greenish mold you usually find on old bread.

Here's what the note that was included stated if anyone is wondering:
"JAPANESE PAGODA TREE - SOPHORA JAPONICA
SOW JUST BELOW THE SURFACE IN A HIGH QUALITY SEEDING MIXTURE. PROVIDE TEMPERATURES OF 72F OR HIGHER. KEEP EVENLY MOIST & PROVIDE LIGHT & HIGH HUMIDITY.MAY BE SLOW GERMINATING[.]"

With all but one seed having germinated the seeds that were sent were of excellent quality which is what Hirt's provided. What happens with the Japanese Pagoda seedlings is now up to me.

Review of Bonsai Boy's Bonsai Conifer Soil Mix - 2 lbs. (1 Qt.)

What can I say? It's dirt, or maybe being more PC, it's soil...it showed up in a ziplock bag which meant I could reseal it, that is good...the amount of dirt was as advertized. It is a fine grained dirt and is free of rocks, etc.I added water and it became mud...so it performed well in the "add water" test.My plants seem to grow well in it, so it's does what dirt is supposed to do.

Not sure how I should rate dirt, but it smells good (for dirt) and is as clean as dirt can be, so I gave it 5 stars.

Not much else I can say...guess I will go play with my dirt now.

Review of Bonsai Dwarf Red Cherry Tomato 35 Seeds - Hybrid

These germinated very quickly and easily and grew into a compact plant about a foot and a half high. The fruit taste just like regular tomatoes (i.e. not particularly sweet) and are really cherry sized.

If you have a lot on your hands you can just do what I do with 'em: Toss them in a mixture of ground black pepper, minced garlic, onion, basil and olive oil and then sun dry them or dry them in a dehydrator. They turn out very crisp, yummy and bursting with flavour. Then they can be eaten as a snack or you can save them in a bottle to put on top of pizzas or toss into any Italian dish you're making.

Happy planting!
